In Jonesboro, AR., it has been an uphill battle to establish Wicca as a recognized religion since we started the Southern Delta Church of Wicca – ATC in 1994. Wicca only came into the public’s eye in this area of the South in 1993. We have struggled to promote and disseminate information to the general populace about the religion, against prejudiced ideas. While we have made some headway in a lot of areas, it seems our best endeavor has been our Adopt a Highway program for litter control.
The overall views and opinions have been praise and compliments for our efforts. When I posted on our local Topix that we had Adopted a Highway, the response was “Good for the Witches.” This was the first time the community had seen us actually giving back to the community, and I believe it opened the door for a different opinion of Wicca in this area. We feel that this one public demonstration has been this best PR for our faith and presented a positive image for the religion in our area
We have had two clean up days, and the cars passing by while we were out there blew their horns and waved support. Plus it has given new life to our congregation as they are excited about actually having a way to fulfill their spiritual duties as guardians of the Earth and give to the community as well. They are now actively looking for more programs for the Church to perform community service.
